WISCONSIN COUNCIL OF CHURCHES WORKSHOP
AT FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, WAUSAU

Presenter: Dr. Ken Stone is Professor of Bible, Culture and Hermeneutics at Chicago Theological Seminary. A member of the United Church of Christ, Stone earned his Ph.D. degree in Hebrew Bible at Vanderbilt University and his Th.M. in Scripture and Interpretation at Harvard Divinity School. He is the author of two books and numerous articles on Biblical interpretation.

Program: What does biblical interpretation have to do with ecology? A small handful of biblical passages have been cited in the past to justify human dominion over nature and the environment. Ecological concerns are sometimes thought to be foreign to biblical theology. However, Christians and Jews are often unaware that numerous texts in the Hebrew Bible contain a more complex picture of the relationships between God, humanity, the earth and its creatures. Many of these texts link God's role as creator and sustainer of the environment to God's concern for humanity and social justice. By studying a number of such texts, this workshop will consider the ways in which the Hebrew Bible can be read in support of a different attitude toward the environment and creation, which will be discussed in terms of "ecojustice."
